Charlotte Gainsbourg Creates Her Essential Wardrobe From Jeans to Tees for Zara

“I understood very early on that my parents had sort of a uniform, maybe my father more than my mother, because my mother was, in the ’70s, having fun with a lot of different styles, even though she had her signature jean style,” Gainsbourg says. “But my father really had two pairs of jeans, four shirts, four T-shirts, and his white Repettos, and that’s it. It was very reassuring for me to find my own silhouettes. I didn’t really look for a style, it was just sort of obvious.”

“I love the fact that I don’t think about it too much,” she continued. “It’s not something I want to spend more than 10 minutes on in the morning, choosing what I want to wear. I mean, I have children between the ages of 10 and 24-years-old, and I’ve always been on my knees with kids. That’s the way I like to live, so I can’t wear heels or a skirt; that’s not possible for my lifestyle in any way, so this collection is really the perfect uniform for now.”

One imagines it will be the perfect uniform for legions of other shoppers too who, after the months in sweatpants and now the barrage of new trends at the spring 2022 shows, are looking for a simple, forthright, comfortable mode of dressing that doesn’t skimp on style. Gainsbourg sees the partnership as her most honest fashion collaboration yet… and who knows, she might be sticking around a little longer at Zara HQ. “They have a home range and they have kids. Of course that would be very exciting to look at,” Gainsbourg says. “If this collaboration works out and if people like it, then we’ll see.”
