John Fury thinks a fight with Tyson Fury for Oleksandr Usyk is an ‘impossible task’ and says the Ukrainian is no better than Steve Cunningham

Oleksandr Usyk is widely considered the number one pound-for-pound fighter in boxing, but not in the eyes of John Fury.

Currently reigning as the unified WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion after successfully winning and defending the titles against Anthony Joshua, the obvious next move for Usyk is to fight WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, in an undisputed clash.

While Usyk has been calling for the Fury fight, he has also mentioned alternative opponents in recent months including, Deontay Wilder and even Canelo, who typically fights at super middleweight.

Fury’s dad, John, believes that this is just a tactic from Usyk to avoid a clash with ‘The Gypsy King’, as it would be a mismatch in the ring.

When asked about a potential undisputed fight between Usyk and Fury, John told talkSPORT via freebets.com, “If we have to get to that blown-up middleweight the Ukrainian we will do. We will chase those belts down.

“Tyson will chase them down and beat them unmercifully. He’ll tan them up like they’ve never been tanned before in their life and they know this.

“Usyk is on about fighting Canelo to avoid a Tyson Fury clash. What Usyk wants to do is make as much money out of the titles that he can before he has to meet ‘The Gypsy King’. He knows the belts are gone.

“With Canelo he can make a good few bob, then take on Tyson for even more cash.

“He knows when he takes on Tyson it’s an impossible task to win. It’s an impossible task for AJ to win too.

“But, that’s why people watch heavyweight boxing, it’s only one punch and it can change everything, but not with ‘The Gypsy King’.

“Tyson’s been in with the most dangerous puncher in the world in Wilder and come through that, beating him three times unmercifully. These other men don’t stand a heavenly prayer.

“Tyson wants to show the public and the world he’s the number one heavyweight in the world and cement his place in history.

“Usyk is a tricky little fighter, but Tyson will close him down and bludgeon him into defeat. I don’t believe Usyk is any better than Steve Cunningham and look what happened to him.

“Yes, Tyson got knocked down in that fight, but that was in his early days as a fighter. He has more experience now, 19 and a half stone, fit as a fiddle, quick hands, quick feet and has the boxing brain to beat anyone.

“Tyson wants all the belts and to have notable scalps along the way. He wants to get them all polished off while he’s at his best. We will make these fights happen.”
