Antony has been training alone at the Ajax, sitting out of games as the side begin their new season.

He scored in their second game against FC Groningen, but has since missed matches against Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht.

In total, he has scored 21 goals in 74 games for the club since joining from Sao Paulo.

Schreuder had said: ‘I am assuming that the club will not sell Antony as we’re in good financial position. I told the board that I want him to stay here.’

But the transfer now looks likely, with the winger set to become United’s fifth signing of the summer window.
