Sungjae Im is back to defend his title this week at the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The South Korean shot a final-round 62 last year to tie the tournament record at 24 under and win by four strokes. The 24-year-old also had three runner-up finishes during the 2021-22 PGA Tour season, including the Tour Championship. Patrick Cantlay, ranked fourth in the world, makes his first PGA Tour appearance of the season after tying for seventh at the 2021-22 finale. He won this event in 2017, was a runner-up twice and finished eighth in his four appearances at the Shriners Children’s Open.
Cantlay is the 7-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Shriners Children’s Open odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Im (10-1) and Max Homa (15-1) are the only other golfers shorter than 20-1 in the Shriners Children’s Open 2022 field, while Aaron Wise (22-1) and Tom Kim (22-1) also are among the top contenders. Before making any 2022 Shriners Children’s Open picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald.
After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.
He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.
McDonald hit both of his head-to-head matchup plays at last week’s Sanderson Farms Championship, and long-shot play Dean Burmester just missed cashing in at 66-1. The 33-year-old rookie stormed up the leaderboard on the weekend but ran out of time and finished fourth, just two strokes back.
Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.
Top 2022 Shriners Children’s Open expert picks
In one major surprise for this week in Las Vegas, McDonald is fading Homa, even though he already has a victory this season. Homa comes off an excellent 2021-22 season where he won twice and was fifth at the Tour Championship. But the 31-year-old has a poor record at Summerlin, where he has missed four cuts and finished 30th in five tournaments. Hitting the greens and going really low are required to win the Shriners, and Homa averaged less than four birdies per round last season (40th on tour) and was 110th in greens in regulation last season.
Meanwhile, McDonald knows Cantlay has had a lot of success in Las Vegas and is eager to see if that continues. The 2021 FedEx Cup champion’s 2017 win in Las Vegas was the first of his eight career tour victories. He also won the BMW Championship in August, and he tied for seventh at the Tour Championship. The 31-year-old had 12 top-10 finishes in 20 PGA Tour events last season and averaged 4.44 birdies per round, fifth-most on tour, and was sixth in scoring average (69.468). Cantlay is 70 under par over his four Shriners appearances. See who else to pick here.
