The 2023 Oscars celebrated the year’s best performances on film, but the red carpet beforehand saw actors deliver their very best fashion performances—concluding a thrilling awards season with their best ensembles. Many of the stars chose designs that clashed the traditional with the contemporary, resulting in looks that felt familiar (glamorous and glitzy!) yet entirely fresh.
White proved to be the breakout color the evening: Stars leaned into minimal, if not slightly bridal, looks. Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams, for one, shined in her Chanel Couture dress that included a sheer, embellished cape overlay. Fellow nominee Michelle Yeoh went the feathered route in her sweetheart-neckline Dior gown. Rooney Mara delighted fashion fans by wearing a vintage empire-waisted white Alexander McQueen gown from the famous “The Girl Who Lived in a Tree” fall 2008 collection.
That’s not to say the night was devoid of colorful attire (though the literal carpet was champagne-hued instead of red). Cate Blanchett’s draped Louis Vuitton number, with a splash of aqua blue up top, was sleek and pared back. Hong Chau opted for a soft pink Prada column gown, complete with a black sequined train. Actor Kerry Condon brought a ray of sunshine with her strapless yellow Versace gown.
The leading men of the night, meanwhile, experimented with suiting in subtle ways. It was an experiment in less is more dressing: Austin Butler chose a sleek black Saint Laurent tuxedo, but spiced things up with the help of patent boots with a slight heel—a more modern version of a dress shoe. Swedish composer Ludwig Goransson also rebuked a simple suit in favor of an embroidered Bode style, featuring a pretty pink floral design as trim. Just enough visual interest to make it stand out.
