UK heatwave: Beauty spots and beaches ruined by careless litter louts | UK | News
As temperatures rocketed to 30C this week across the UK, daytrippers and holidaymakers flocked to beaches, parks and other beauty spots. However, some have left heaps of rubbish, included used barbeques, bottles and cans and dirty nappies, discarded on the ground.
One dog walker was disgusted to spot rubbish abandoned by a riverside in a park in Leicester.
She told Leicestershire Live: “I was absolutely mortified and disgusted.
“I was on my regular dog walk through the beautiful fields and by the pebble beach at Aylestone Meadows to be met with mountains of rubbish, litter scattered everywhere.
“There were used barbecues and even a dirty nappy.
“Understandably the nice weather has been enjoyed by all of us and this particular spot has been incredibly busy with people enjoying the water.
“But why, if they wanted to enjoy food and drinks, did they not take their litter with them? They had the arms to carry it there with them?”
Council staff had to clear the discarded pizza boxes, beer bottles, cans and plastic bags.
The dog walker added: “The sheer ignorance and lack of respect of some people has spoilt the area for everyone else.
“The council even provide a number of black waste bags tied to the fence nearby.
“I’m utterly disgusted and saddened and I think I speak on behalf of many others who would usually enjoy the area.
“It’s such a great shame.”
Photos taken at a beach in Merseyside show empty bottles, discarded containers and plastic bags.
There were also similar scenes in Newcastle, Cornwall and Devon among other areas yesterday.
And in Lancashire, beaches were trashed with “disgusting” litter.
Toto Jackson, who volunteered to clean one of the beaches, said: “What people leave on the beach is disgusting.
“There’s nappies, wipes, human and dog poo, cans, glass and plastic.”
Writing online about the litterbugs, one woman called them “absolutely disgusting”.
The Facebook user added: “They’re absolutely disgusting. These people give everyone a bad name. There’s no excuse for this, take a bag with you and bring your rubbish home to bin.”
Another posted: “Some people just don’t care anymore – they have zero respect for the environment or others. Disgraceful behaviour.”
