You’ve been using way too much toothpaste
A DENTIST has revealed exactly how much toothpaste you should be using to clean your teeth and you’ve probably been using way too much.
Thought lathering on the toothpaste would leave your mouth feeling even fresher? Turns out it can actually be pretty bad for your teeth.
Dr. K. Sarvendran, who runs her own private dental clinic and is from Toronto, Canada, has become known for sharing her professional teeth-related advice online via TikTok.
In a recent video, she revealed the correct amount of toothpaste that is needed for an adult and you don’t have to cover the entire head of your toothbrush – like they do in toothpaste adverts on TV.
“This is how much toothpaste they show you in the commercials – not necessary at all,” Dr Sarvendran says in the video, squeezing toothpaste all the way along her toothbrush.
Revealing how much you should be using instead, she then squeezes a pea-sized blob onto her toothbrush.
“All you need is a nice pea-sized amount, that’s enough,” Dr Sarvendran stressed.
People flocked to the comments of her post and were floored by the revelation, as they confessed they had definitely been over-zealous with the toothpaste.
“Ive been using waaaay too much then (sic),” said one person.
“Thanks for the wise advice,” wrote another, while a third agreed and added: “Thanks for the good tip.”
It’s previously been proven that too much toothpaste can cause damage to the teeth as it can break down the enamel.
Toothpaste contains abrasives in its ingredients which can, along with vigorous, can chip away at the enamel and thin it over time depending on how fast, how long and how hard people brush their teeth each day.
In a report published by the International Dental Journal in 2011 it was also revealed that patients often make the mistake of brushing their teeth more, thinking it will make them look whiter.
“Actually the opposite occurs; as the enamel becomes thinner, the dentine is closer to the surface, resulting in a darker overall appearance, which encourages more brushing,” the study reveals.
